Acupuncture

Acupuncture is proven to remedy acute or chronic ailments, relieve pain, enhance recuperative powers, and strengthen the immune system.

At Lumina AcuClinic, we specialize in Traditional Chinese Acupuncture in which extremely fine, flexible, single-use sterilized needles are placed at important connective points on the body. We also use Trigger Point techniques to relieve discomfort in areas that are either non-responsive to massage therapy or too deep to be reached by hand. Trigger point acupuncture is very similar to Dry Needling. There is no pain when the needles are inserted, and you may experience a sensation of tingling or warmth as your body relaxes.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine is the oldest and most comprehensive form of herbal medicine in the world. Herbal treatments are commonly combined with acupuncture treatments to accelerate and deliver the most successful treatment.

Unlike most herbal supplements sold in the US which are derived from a single plant, Chinese herbal remedies are always formulations consisting of multiple herbs. This combination of herbs increases their overall effectiveness while reducing the chance of side effects. The herbal components are tailored to your needs and differs depending on age, gender, and severity of disease.

Other Therapies

Auricular (Ear) Acupuncture Therapy: Auricular acupuncture can be used during regular acupuncture treatments, especially for addictions, weight loss, and smoking cessation. Acupoints on the ear are stimulated with tiny seeds. With over 200 acupoints on each ear the ear is considered a ‘microsystem’ of the entire body. A trained acupuncturist can use the ear to not only treat disease but also as a diagnostic tool.

E-Stim: E-Stim is the application of small scale electric pulsing to trigger points or other inflamed tendino-muscular areas for pain management. It is a gentle and comfortable sensation. Other healthcare practitioners such as physical therapists and chiropractors may use E-Stim in their treatments on top of the skin, however as acupuncturists we apply E-Stim to an acupuncture needle, allowing the therapy to penetrate deep into the muscle layer for more powerful results. E-Stim helps flush out unwanted inflammation, promotes increased range of motion in an injured area, and stimulates blood flow to aide in faster recovery. It can also be used to help break up scar tissue after a surgical operation to prevent permanent tension in that area.

Cupping: Cupping has also been a part of Chinese medicine for over 2,500 years and is similar to a deep tissue massage. Typically, massage oil is applied to the skin and a heated cup is then inverted onto the skin. The heat creates a vacuum effect and the skin is drawn up into the cup. This causes an increase of blood to the area, toxin release, circulation in the lymph nodes, relaxation of tight muscles and reduced inflammation. Cupping can leave noticeable marks that resemble a bruise. They may look shocking, but they are not painful and will disappear within a few days.

Moxa: Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy consisting of burning dried mugwort (aromatic plant) to warm up particular points on the body. Suppliers usually age the mugwort and grind it up to a fluff; practitioners burn the fluff or process it further into a cigar-shaped stick. Practitioners use moxa rolls to warm regions and meridian points with the intention of stimulation circulation through the points and inducing a smoother flow of blood and qi.

Gua sha: Gua sha can also a part of acupuncture therapy especially for acute or chronic pain. Massage oil is applied and a smooth-edged instrument is used to apply short or long strokes on the skin. This stroking motion creates redness or bruising. The guiding theory behind gua sha is that the pressure and motion breaks up stagnation to promote smoother blood flow, thereby relieving pain.

These therapies are prescribed at the doctor’s discretion. Feel free to ask how non-needle therapies could fit into your treatment!
